The toll on her family was unspeakable. Her sister, Bettie, was murdered in Auschwitz. Her brother, David, died in Warsaw. Her parents, Salomon and Grietje, were killed in Sobibor. Minco was the sole survivor of her immediate family. While in hiding, she wrote much of the book in diary form, but those pages were lost when she had to flee. After the war, the book gradually came together from short stories she had published in magazines.
The family is constantly unsure who to trust. Non-Jewish neighbors sometimes help, but often ignore or betray them. The "strangers" who eventually inhabit Marga's house represent the indifference of the world.
